Wine and Cheese and Desserts, Oh My!

Hope you’re all getting settled in nicely during the first week of the semester. Slow Food Vassar is back in 2011 with our first informal meeting, to be had over cheese and desserts (with the added bonus of wine, for those of you 21 and older) next Thursday, February 3rd at 8 pm in TH 128, aka Meat House. Slow Food Vassar will be providing the wine and cheese, and rumor has it that the Slow Food Vassar founders will be preparing some delicious seasonal desserts to boot.
We’re happy to host, but it’d be even better if this was a cooperative effort- If you’re up to the challenge, feel free to bring desserts, cheese, and wine of your own- we’d love to have it (and you)!
If you think you’re going to be able to join us, please RSVP to slowfoodvassar@gmail.com no later than Wednesday, February 2nd at 4pm so that we have an idea of how much wine and cheese to buy.
Can’t wait to see you all there!

Walmart, Sodexo & Meatless Mondays

Here’s a link to an article from The Huffington Post on Monday about how Sodexo, the world’s largest food services provider (Sodexo currently provides food services for over 900 hospitals, 2000 corporate clients, 175 government sites, 650 college campuses, and 150 private schools) will begin promoting plant-based entrees in support of the Meatless Monday campaign. Additionally, it mentions that Walmart, the nation’s largest grocery chain, announced that it “will cut sodium by a quarter, reduce sugar from some of its private label products, and decrease the price of its fruits and vegetables.”
This is great news, seeing as these changes are coming from profit-driven agencies that will inevitably be taking a hit by supporting better eating habits.

While this article from Nicolette Niman (her testimony is featured in Johnathan Safran Foer’sEating Animalsis far from recent (published in November 2009) it is an excellent source of just what its title would suggest: how to avoid eating factory farmed foods.

Food Fads

This article from Eating Well via The Huffington Post is a must-read for anyone interested in food. Not only does the article cover an interesting topic in and of itself, it has links to a number of related articles for each of the trending topics it lists.
We’re especially fond of trends eight and ten.
